Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month is recognized throughout Canada every year in June. As we kick off the month, we thought we’d share some information about Pride & its symbols.

Diversity, equity and inclusion continue to be key priorities of McFarlan Rowlands, and we strive to be an organization that supports openness and does not tolerate hate. It is our hope to be a place where you can succeed by being your true self, regardless of sexual orientation/identity, gender, race, age, or ability.

The Pride & Pride Progress Flags

During Pride Month, it is not uncommon to see the rainbow flag being proudly displayed as a symbol for inclusion. The flag is not meant to represent division, but rather to recognize and support people of all different identities.

For the last 40+ years, the LGBT Pride flag produced by Gilbert Baker’ with its six distinguished colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet) has been the globally recognized symbol of the LGBT community. But in the past few years, Pride festivals, companies, and activists worldwide have been embracing ‘The Progress Flag’ as their emblem for the queer community instead.

Created by Daniel Quasar in 2018, the Pride Progress Flag features black and brown stripes to portray marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color and baby blue, pink and white to incorporate the trans flag in its design. The intention behind this change is not to replace or erase what the Pride flag was, but rather to recognize the value of all parts of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Pride & Insurance

A recent article in Insurance Business Canada highlights the IBAO’s exciting new partnership with Link Canada – professional network for members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their allies who work in the insurance sector. Founded in 2023 to support the local LGBTQ2S+ community within the insurance industry, Link will offer education and resources to those new to the conversation, and provide welcoming and inclusive networking opportunities while helping organizations build successful employee resource groups.
